santa cruz beach (dapitan city, zamboanga del norte)

santa cruz beach

Jose Rizal arrived at Santa Cruz Beach in Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte at around 7:00 PM on July 17, 1892. He was exiled in this part of the Philippines by virtue of a decree issued by Governal General Eulogio Despujol due to various controversial books and proclamations he has authored.

Rizal's party that night included Captain Delgras and 3 artillery men. He wrote in his diary that the beach at Dapitan was gloomy and dark. This was then his first evening of his 4-year exile in Dapitan.

But that outlook did not in anyway became a foretaste of what was to come. Today, there are many enduring reminders of Rizal's presence in this historic city in Mindanao - a waterworks system, a public plaza and a church just to name a few. Dapitan, was a large scale prison for Rizal, but he really made the most out of his stay just nonetheless.
